About HillTop Hounds

Welcome to HillTop Hounds, Bromsgrove's premier choice for compassionate, professional pet care and canine behaviour modification. Founded and operated by James Grant — a fully insured, DBS-checked canine behaviourist with over 15 years of experience — we offer far more than just standard dog walking.
Holding a Level 4 Advanced Canine Behaviour certification and PPGBI accreditation, we specialise in force-free, stress-free care. Whether your dog needs energetic group walks, dedicated pet sitting, or targeted behaviour modification plans, HillTop Hounds provides a safe, structured, and enriching environment tailored entirely to your dog's individual needs.
My Approach
I believe in building trust with both dogs and their owners. Every dog is unique, and I take the time to read their body language, understand their personality, and work at their pace. With reactive or nervous dogs I draw on Behaviour Adjustment Training (BAT) principles — creating calm, low-pressure experiences that let the dog choose to engage with a trigger rather than being forced past it, building genuine confidence over time.
Safety First
I operate with clear contracts, risk assessments, and safety procedures. I am fully insured with public liability and care, custody & control cover.
Local Service
I serve Bromsgrove and the surrounding areas. All walks are conducted on foot, locally, with careful route planning to ensure safety and enjoyment.
Communication
I am committed to clear and open communication with my clients. You will receive regular updates and can always reach out with any questions or concerns.
Blue Cross Bromsgrove — specialist work with reactive dogs.
Before founding HillTop Hounds, James worked hands-on at Blue Cross Bromsgrove Rescue Centre, supporting some of the most vulnerable dogs to come through the charity's doors. Many arrived with deep fear, frustration, and reactivity — dogs that other services struggled to help. It was here that James developed his specialist expertise in Behaviour Adjustment Training (BAT), a force-free, evidence-based approach that helps dogs overcome reactivity by building confidence and giving them choice.

What is Behaviour Adjustment Training (BAT)?
BAT is a progressive, reward-based method developed for dogs that react to triggers — other dogs, people, traffic, or novel environments. Rather than correcting the reaction, BAT helps the dog learn a calmer alternative by working at a distance and intensity the dog can cope with, then gradually building tolerance through repeated, positive experiences.
At Blue Cross, James applied these principles with dogs that had histories of bite incidents, barrier frustration, and fear-based aggression. The results spoke for themselves — dogs that had been labelled "difficult" began to relax, engage, and trust again.
The four principles I bring to every walk
Reading Body Language
Every interaction starts with observation — ear position, tail carriage, lip licks, displacement behaviours. I read what the dog is telling me before I ask anything of them.
Working at the Dog's Pace
BAT is never rushed. I create distance and let the dog choose to approach a trigger when they feel ready, building genuine confidence rather than flooding or forcing.
Low-Pressure Learning
Instead of correcting reactive behaviour, I set up calm, controlled scenarios where the dog can practise a different response — and reward the choice they make.
Functional Alternatives
I teach the dog what to do instead of reacting — a retreat, a check-in, a disengagement — so they gain real-world skills they can use on every walk.
Real outcomes from the rescue floor
- Dogs that previously lunged and barked on lead learned to observe triggers calmly at a distance
- Fearful, shut-down kennel dogs regained confidence and became adoption-ready
- Several reactive dogs went on to successful rehoming as a direct result of structured BAT sessions
- Owners were coached to continue the techniques at home, ensuring lasting progress
How this expertise helps your dog
Whether your dog is confident and sociable or nervous and reactive, the same principles apply — observe, respect the dog's threshold, and build trust through choice. This is what sets HillTop Hounds apart from a standard dog walking service. If your dog struggles with reactivity, anxiety, or behavioural challenges, you are in experienced, understanding hands.
Discuss your dog's needs
Your dog's safety is non-negotiable.
Leaving your dog with someone new is a big decision. These are the standards and protections behind every HillTop Hounds walk and visit — so you can relax knowing your pet is in fully qualified, insured hands.
Fully Insured
Comprehensive public liability and care, custody & control (CCC) insurance, so your dog is protected on every walk and visit.
DBS Checked
I hold an enhanced DBS certificate, giving you full confidence that your pet and home are in safe, trusted hands.
Pet First Aid Trained
Trained in canine first aid and CPR, so I can respond calmly and correctly if your dog ever needs help on a walk.
Risk Assessments
Every walking route and each dog's individual needs are assessed in advance to keep walks safe and enjoyable.
Secure Key Handling
Your keys are kept securely and never labelled with your address — your home's security matters as much as your pet.
Small Group Sizes
I never walk more than six dogs at once, so every dog gets the attention, control, and care they deserve.
Risk Assessment Process
Before any dog joins HillTop Hounds, I carry out a structured risk assessment covering the dog's temperament, medical needs, behavioural history, and legal status. Each walking route is assessed for hazards — livestock, water, traffic, and trigger exposure — and group compositions are reviewed for compatibility before every walk.
- Pre-service behavioural & temperament assessment
- Route hazard mapping reviewed seasonally
- Group compatibility checked before each walk
- Ongoing reassessment as needs change
Selective Screening Process
Not every dog is suited to group walks, and not every service is the right fit for every dog. I operate a selective screening process to ensure each dog is placed in the environment where they will thrive — whether that's a group walk, a solo walk, or a home visit. This protects every dog in my care.
- Mandatory intake form covering health & behaviour
- Vaccination, flea & worm status verified
- Banned-breed & legal status check (DDA 1991)
- Trial walk to confirm suitability before commitment
Peace of mind, guaranteed
Every booking is backed by full insurance, safety procedures, and a genuine commitment to your dog's wellbeing. New clients also enjoy their first walk free.
Awards, courses & certifications

Professional references & industry experience.
Before founding HillTop Hounds, James built hands-on experience across rescue shelters, police kennels, grooming salons, and training schools — including specialist Behaviour Adjustment Training (BAT) work with reactive dogs at Blue Cross Bromsgrove. These are the words of the professionals he worked alongside.

Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter
"James has successfully helped to walk, feed and clean the dogs and cats at the animal shelter. He completed tasks well when asked and always does his best."
"James has been a great help in carrying out the day-to-day work at the shelter. He has worked well with all the other volunteers and staff and the dogs."

Blue Cross Bromsgrove Rescue Centre
"James worked closely with our most challenging dogs, many of whom arrived with fear, frustration, and reactivity issues. He applied Behaviour Adjustment Training (BAT) principles — reading each dog's body language, working at the dog's pace, and creating calm, low-pressure learning experiences that let the dogs choose to approach triggers rather than being forced past them. The progress we saw in dogs that had previously struggled to cope in kennels was remarkable, and several went on to successful rehoming as a direct result of his work."

Lisa Jackson Dog Services
"James worked for me for 5 years during his animal behaviour and welfare studies. He was always punctual, polite and hard working. He followed instruction well and was a huge help at my puppy classes. He is keen and willing to learn and the clients found him to be a friendly and able assistant."

West Mercia Police Dog Unit
"James demonstrated enthusiasm and diligence in completing all assigned tasks. These included exercising and feeding police dogs, cleaning kennels, grooming dogs, and preparing food. Additionally, James had the opportunity to observe police dog training. James consistently identified tasks that required attention and took proactive steps to complete them without being prompted. His contributions proved invaluable to the kennel staff during his placement in the dog section."

Carol's Canine Grooming, Worcester
"James possesses a deep affection for dogs, and it is evident that they reciprocate this sentiment. He maintains a professional demeanour and demonstrates a commitment to continuous learning and skill enhancement. During his work experience at a dog grooming salon, James exhibited trustworthiness, reliability, and politeness. While dog grooming may not have aligned with his interests, he has since established a thriving and fulfilling business in dog walking, training, and pet sitting. Notably, he has secured a private field for the dogs' exercise, which he clearly enjoys. James's dedication and hard work are commendable, and I extend my best wishes for his continued success in the future."

Lisa Jackson Dog Training
"James has made significant progress in his training. His confidence has grown, and his efficiency has improved. He is demonstrating the potential to become an effective dog trainer. James is highly enthusiastic and adheres to instructions diligently. He is also reliable and demonstrates good customer service skills."

Spice Cuisine, Worcester
"James joined us while studying hospitality and catering, working a few hours three or four times a week. He started handing out leaflets and quickly progressed through every station — pot wash, drink stock replenishment, serving customers, barista work making coffees, iced smoothies and milkshakes, and finally main-line food preparation and plating up dishes. He even trained new staff. His willingness to learn every role made him invaluable."

Toby Carvery, Worcester & Gloucester
"James worked his way up from pot wash to main-line chef across our Worcester and Gloucester kitchens — a demanding, fast-paced environment, especially for someone navigating neurodivergence and dyspraxia. His focus, reliability, and genuine care always stood out. When he was promoted, he was even selected to attend the managers' golf day and dinner with my partner — despite not yet being a manager himself — a testament to how highly the team valued him. When he decided to set up HillTop Hounds, I was proud to support his transition. Jasper, my cocker spaniel, was one of his very first walking clients."
"I have used his dog walking service for my cocker spaniel Jasper. I find his knowledge and understanding of dogs reassuring. Jasper loves his runs — he gets so excited when they come to take him out."
